does not flinch
at water.

Luxury vinyl plank is a printed and textured surface bonded to a rigid or flexible core, cut into planks that lock together over your subfloor. It reads as oak or slate from standing height, it comes in more colors and textures than any other category we stock, and it does not care about a spilled glass of water. That last part is why it has taken over kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and finished basements across St. Charles County.

What is actually inside a plank.

Every plank is a stack of layers. A clear wear layer on top, a printed film underneath it carrying the wood or stone image, a core that gives the plank its rigidity and stability, and on many lines an attached pad on the bottom. Two of those layers decide almost everything. The wear layer decides how the floor looks in five years. The core decides how it feels underfoot and how it handles a subfloor that is not perfectly flat.

The wear layer is the number to ask for.

Wear layer thickness is measured in mils, one mil being a thousandth of an inch. It is the clear top surface, and it is the only thing between the printed pattern and the dog, the dining chairs and the grit that walks in off the driveway.

• 6 to 8 mil. Light residential traffic. A guest bedroom, a closet, a spare bath that sees a few people a week.
• 12 mil. The common residential specification. Kitchens, hallways and family rooms in an average household.
• 20 mil and up. Heavy residential and light commercial. Big families, several animals, or a floor you intend to keep through the next remodel.

The overall thickness of the plank is a different number and it is not a quality grade. A thicker plank hides subfloor imperfection better and sounds more solid underfoot, but a 12 mil wear layer on a thick plank still wears like 12 mil.

Rigid cores, and which one suits the room.

• SPC, stone plastic composite. Limestone powder and PVC pressed into a dense core. It is the hardest and the most dimensionally stable of the three, which matters in a sunroom or a four season porch where the temperature swings. Dents are less likely. It is also thinner and firmer, so it reports every ridge in the subfloor.
• WPC, wood plastic composite. A foamed core, thicker and slightly softer. Warmer and quieter to walk on, more forgiving over minor subfloor variation, marginally easier to dent under a heavy point load.
• Flexible glue down LVT. No rigid core. It is bonded directly to a very flat subfloor and it is what commercial spaces with rolling loads usually get. See commercial flooring for how that plays out in offices, showrooms and schools.

Waterproof, and what that word covers.

A waterproof core will not swell, buckle or come apart when it gets wet. That is the plank. It is not a promise that the room beneath is sealed. Water pooled at the perimeter or running under a floating floor from a supply line still has to be dried out, and a leak still has to be repaired. What waterproof does buy you is calm. A dropped ice tray, a dog shaking off, a kid at the sink. None of it is an emergency.

This is the line that separates luxury vinyl from laminate, whose core is wood based, and it is the reason we put it in basements where a slab breathes moisture and solid hardwood would not be the right call. For a seamless surface with no plank joints at all, sheet vinyl is still worth a look, and tile remains the answer in a shower.

Pets, kids and the real test.

Scratch resistance comes from the wear layer and the surface finish, never from the picture printed below it. A matte or low sheen plank with genuine embossed texture hides day to day marks far better than a high gloss one, which throws light across every scuff. Mid tone colors with visible grain variation are more forgiving than a flat, uniform dark. Felt pads under chair legs, mats at the doors that face the driveway, and a claw trim now and then do more for a floor than any coating claim on a sample tag.

Subfloor and installation.

Most luxury vinyl plank floats. It is not fastened down. It sits over the subfloor with an expansion gap hidden behind the base trim, which lets the floor move with the seasons instead of buckling. That makes the subfloor the whole job. Flatness gets checked and corrected first, concrete slabs get a moisture check, and the planks acclimate in the house before anything clicks together. Transitions to the next room, the height at the appliances and the reveal under a door casing all get sorted at the measure, not on install day. Our own crews handle it, with 15 or more years of experience and most at 25 or more years.

Living with it.

• Sweep or vacuum with the beater bar switched off. Grit is what dulls the wear layer.
• Damp mop with a pH neutral vinyl cleaner. No wax, no polish, no oil soap.
• Skip the steam mop. Heat and pressure can loosen the layers, and most manufacturers exclude it from the warranty.
• Use felt pads, and check that mats are labeled non staining. Some rubber and latex backings discolor vinyl over time.
• Give it shade in a sun drenched room. Long term direct sun can shift the color of any printed floor.
