Hardwood
Planks milled from one solid piece of wood. It ages into something better looking, and when it finally shows its years you sand it back and refinish it rather than replace it. Best above grade, over a wood subfloor.
A real wood wear layer over a cross layered core. It holds its line where solid wood would move, which is what makes it the answer over concrete slabs and in lower levels.
A hard wearing top layer over a dense core, printed to read as wood or stone. It takes a beating from kids and chairs and usually costs less than hardwood or tile.
The wood or stone look built on a waterproof core, with a clear wear layer over the top. It is the floor people put in kitchens, baths, basements and houses with dogs that do not wipe their feet, and it comes in enough finishes that you rarely have to settle.
Wide rolls that go down with few or no seams, so there is less for water to get into. Easy to keep clean, easy on the budget, and a long standing pick for laundry rooms and baths.
Ceramic, porcelain and natural stone for floors, showers and walls. Porcelain is the denser of the two clay bodies, and size, layout and grout color change the room as much as the tile does.
Warmer bedrooms, quieter stairs and a soft surface for kids to play on. Fiber and density decide how it wears, and the pad underneath decides how it feels. Carpet tile is the same idea in squares you can lift and replace one at a time.

Solid wood does not belong below grade. Engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and carpet tile all handle a slab, and carpet tile lets you replace one square instead of a room.
Carpet still wins where you want warmth underfoot and a quieter house. The pad matters as much as the carpet, and stairs deserve their own conversation.
